July 9th - E-Tegami and Otafuku Sauce

Yesterday we learned about e-tegami, a certain method of painting. It is usually done on postcards, hence the "tegami" in the name. The style requires a locked arm and the use of a brush to lay the ink down. After putting the lines carefully on the card, you then paint the colors messily, in a sort of impressionistic style, before applying your personal stamp or hanko. It was a lot of fun, and I can't really describe the technique very well in this medium. You can see some of the presentation she gave, as well as try and follow the pictures below if you'd like to try!

Today we went to Otafuku Sauce Company, where we learned all about how they make their sauces. We got to go through their entire plant. It was really interesting, especially the "people-free" warehouse - the sauces go in and come out and no one is ever in there. Robots handle all of the storage and inventory shifting.

After visiting their plant, we went next door to the Otafuku Kitchen, where we were taught how to and got to make okanomiaki, a delicious Japanese treat. Think of it as a cross between a pancake, an omlette, and a bowl of noodles, and you have about the right idea. We made Hiroshima-style okanomiaki, my favorite. I had a blast cooking, as usual.

After eating that for lunch, we returned to HIT and had class, which is always fun, especially on skit days.
